Alka Yagnik was born on 20 March 1966 in a middle-class Gujarati family in Kolkata. Her mother Shubha Yagnik was a classical music singer. Due to the atmosphere of music in the house, Alka's interest also turned to music. Alka started her career at the age of six with Kolkata Akashwani, where she used to sing Bhajans.
She moved to Mumbai with her mother at the age of 10. In Mumbai, she met director Raj Kapoor, who impressed by her voice, advised her to meet musician Laxmikant Pyarelal. Alka Yagnik started her career as a playback singer with the 1979 film Payal Ki Jhankar.
Alka sang "Mere Angane Mein Tumhara Kya Kam Hai" in the film "Lavaaris" starring Amitabh Bachchan, which became a tremendous hit. After struggling in Mumbai for nearly eight years, she was able to make her mark as playback singer after the success of her song "Ek Do Teen" in the 1988 film "Tezaab".
In the year 1989, Alka sang superhit duets like "Oh Mere Humsafar", "Akela Hai To Kya Gum Hai" and "Gajab Ka Hai Din Soch Jara" with Udit Narayan in the film "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak". After the success of these films, Alka started getting offers for many good films.
In 1994, she received the National Award for Best Playback Singer for the first time for the song "Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke". She was also later awarded with National Award for the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1999. Alka has been awarded the Filmfare Award seven times in her career so far.
Alka has sung nearly 20,000 songs for about 600 films so far. She has sung more songs with Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan. Also her duet with Kumar Sanu was well received by the audience.
