Being the daughter of classical musician Late Deena Nath Mangeshkar, music comes naturally to her. Born on 8th September 1933, she was third among the five siblings. She was only 10 when her father passed away and this untimely death forced her and Lata Mangeshkar to start singing in films. Very optimistic and a brave soul, Asha ji has always managed to emerge as a winner.
At the age of 16, she took a huge step of marrying Lata Mangeshkar’s secretary Ganpatrao Bhosle against her family wishes. Nearly after a decade, her marriage failed miserably and Asha was shown the exit door by him along with her two children while she was pregnant with the third one. She had no choice but to come back to the maternal home with Hemant, Varsha and the third unborn child (now Anand). In the music industry, she later met R.D Burman and tied the knot with him in 1980. Unfortunately, they separated in the late 1980s because of his alcohol addiction and chain-smoking habit. He passed away in 1994 of a heart attack.
In 1977 she made it big when she became the first Indian singer nominated for the Grammy award. This nomination was for the album having 12 classical numbers having Asha’s voice with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Always interested in trying something new, she opted for acting in a Marathi flick ‘Mai’ starring Ram Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure.
Emerging as a much more versatile personality, she kept on experimenting with different kinds of music while giving the audience a delightful feel. She has traveled across the world to perform concerts. She has successfully given major hits while collaborating with various foreign celebrities like Boy George, Michael Stipe, Brett Lee, Sara Brightman and many more.
