Gulzar is a famous writer, a lyricist, a director and a poet. He was Born in Jhelum District (now in Pakistan). His family moved to India after Partition. He joined Bimal Roy Productions in 1961 and got his first break as a lyricist writing for Bimal Roy's "Bandini".
The success of this film made him Bimalda's full-time assistant and as a result he got writing for films by acclaimed directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Asit Kumar Sen. Furthermore he worked with many other music directors including R.D Burman, Vishal Bhardwaj and A.R Rahman.
Finally in 2004 He was awarded Padma Bhushan.
Some of the films he has written include Anand, Guddi, Bawarchi and Namak Haram for Mukherjee and Do Dooni Char, Khamoshi, and Safar for Sen.
Gulzar made his directorial debut with "Mere Apne" in 1971. He then went on to make Parichay in 1972 and Koshish in 1972. Being a lyricist and collaborating with film composers, he always had a high quality of music in his films, especially with Rahul Dev Burman.
Gulzar primarily writes in Urdu and Punjabi. Also his poetry is in the Triveni type of stanza. His poems are published in three compilations; Chand Pukhraaj Ka, Raat Pashminey Ki and Pandrah Paanch Pachattar. His short stories are published in Raavi-paar.
Also Gulzar has written lyrics and dialogues for several Doordarshan TV series. including Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland. He has also recently written for the children's audio book series Karadi Tales. Gulzar is also associated with Aarushi, Eklavya foundation an NGO based in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh working in the field of education.
